East Link Current News

East Link light rail construction is now underway in Bellevue, notably in south Bellevue, Central Bellevue (Downtown) and North Bellevue (BelRed.) Construction activities will sometimes impact how you access the city. Your patience in planning your commute in advance and your understanding that construction schedules often change are appreciated.

Below are current/ongoing (short term and long term) impacts due to East Link construction listed by segment.  

South Bellevue Segment/Area          

Area is approximately 2.2 miles from I-90 to south of Main Street and includes South Bellevue Park-and-Ride (station and garage).

INTERSTATE 90 (I-90)            

       
  •  I-90 east to northbound Bellevue Way SE general purpose and HOV off-ramps closed, Tues. Jan. 22- Wed. Jan. 23, 9pm to 5am. NOTE: Impacts to ST Express 550 Construction Alert and map
  • I-90 Bike Trail and 108th Ave SE: One lane of 108th closed between SE 34th and SE Lake Road near Enatai Beach Park, starting October 8, Monday-Friday, 7am to 6pm. during working hours, people on bicycles will be asked by flaggers to dismount. During non-work hours, metal plates will cover the work area. Work to last through early November 2018. Construction Alert (10.3.18)
  • Night work to construct long-span rail track, Monday-Friday (Saturday morning), 8pm to 5am. More information          
  • 7 a.m. construction start time at South Bellevue light rail station site.
  • 24-hour/7-day closure Bellevue Way SE to I-90 westbound HOV ramp: Began April 16; last through December 28, 2018. Sound Transit’s contractor will close the Bellevue Way SE to I-90 west HOV ramp.  (Construction Alert 05.09.18

BELLEVUE WAY SOUTHEAST           

  • Bellevue Way SE one lane each direction between I-90 and the "Y" at 112th Ave; Tues. Jan. 22- Thurs Jan. 24 and Mon. Jan. 28, 9pm to 5am. Construction Alert and map
  • Bellevue Way SE and ramps between Bellevue Way SE and I-90, Full closure. Sat. Jan. 26-Sun. Jan. 27. Construction Alert and map     
  • Bellevue Way SE: Traffic control re-established as 2 lanes northbound into downtown Bellevue (6am to 12pm) and 2 lanes southbound to I-90 (2pm to 6pm) starting Jan. 2, 2019. 
    • Eastside curb lane closed 5am; work begins at 7am.
    • Drivers need to access 112th Ave SE need to be in the farthest right open lane.
    • Occasional weekend closures through 2020.  

112th AVENUE SOUTHEAST     

  • 112th Ave SE temporary bypass road open. One lane in each direction between SE 15th Street and SE 8th Street. Traffic on 112th Ave SE will be diverted onto the new temporary bypass road. Pedestrian access available on west side of 112th Ave SE. This shift is necessary so that the road-over-rail undercrossing can be built which is estimated to take 14 months
  • 112th Avenue SE daily lane closures as needed, between Main Street and SE 8th, Mon-Fri 9 am to 4 pm.  Construction Alert (12.28.18)
  • Sidewalk closure on 112th Avenue Southeast between Southeast 8th and Bellevue Way Southeast will shift from the eastside to the west side. One sidewalk will be maintained at all times. People walking are asked to follow the signed detour route, crossing at the signalized intersections located at Southeast 8th and Bellevue Way Southeast.  Construction Alert (05.03.18).    

ADDITIONAL ONGOING IMPACTS   

  • Sound wall construction between 111th Ave SE and 112th Ave SE starts May 14. Grading and construction of slope between the rail guideway and wall, excavation, rebar installation, concrete pour to occur before wall installation. Details and map in Construction Alert (05.17.18)   
  • Surrey Downs Park access: The north entrance from 112th Avenue SE to Surrey Downs Park and the parking area closed Feb. 15, 2018. The Park closed April 2 for construction as part of the Surrey Downs Park Master Plan. Walk in entrance to the Park is available at 111th Ave SE, 111th Pl SE and at the intersection of SE 6th St and 110th Ave                                              
  • Pilot turn restrictions at SE 16th St/108th Ave and SE 16th St/Bellevue Way extended through duration of light rail constructionRead the details about the pilot program.                     
  • Winters House Protection and Monitoring underwayMore information in Construction Alert.(09.06.17) 
  • SE 15th Street temporarily closed during construction. Workers and visitors needing to access Bellefield Office Park will use 114th Ave SE from SE 8th Street.
  • SE 4th Street entrance from 112th Avenue SE permanently closed. .City sent postcard to Surrey Downs and Bellecrest neighbors. 
  • Winters House closed during construction.  The Eastside Heritage Center's archive and research services has been relocated. To access the collection, call 425-450-1109 or email collections@eastsideheritagecenter.org
  • South Bellevue Park and Ride closed during construction. Commuters are asked not to park within Bellevue neighborhoods.      

    Central Bellevue Segment/Area

    Area includes East Main, Bellevue Downtown, Wilburton and Spring District/120th Stations. The downtown tunnel is located in the area but was contracted separately.        
              

    110TH AVENUE NORTHEAST                       

    • Southbound 110th Ave NE closed, NE 2nd Place to NE 3rd Place: Closure began April 2018 and will last through 2019. Closure needed for excavation and construction of a tunnel ventilation and access shaft to the main tunnel beneath 110th.  A detour will be established for southbound traffic. (Construction alert)                      
    • Long-term lane closures on 110th Ave NE by City Hall           
      • Starting July 9, 2018: Partial closure through spring 2019; one lane of traffic; each direction between NE 4th and NE 6th streets (Phase 2).Construction Alert (07.05.18)  
      • Full closure spring -winter 2019 in northern portion needed for road restoration (Phase 3). 

    CITY HALL 

    • NE 6th Street access to City Hall is permanently closed.

    ADDITIONAL ONGOING IMPACTS  

    North Bellevue Segment/Area (BelRed)

    The Bel-Red/130th Station and the Operations and Maintenance Facility-East are located in this area which is approximately 1 mile from 124th Ave NE to SR520.        

    • NE 20th St/136th Place NE: Eastbound lane reduction (to one lane) on NE 20th Street, Jan. 10 through April 2019. Right turn only restriction on 136th Pl NE as needed, 6pm to 7am. Construction alert and map (1.4.19)
    • 136th Place NE: Nighttime closures on 136th Place NE from NE Spring Blvd to NE 20th St. Mon. Jan 7 through Fri. Jan 18, 8pm to 6am. Construction alert (1.4.19)
    • 136th Place NE: One-way traffic shift starts Mon. Sept. 24 through Spring 2019. Only northbound traffic allowed on 136th (toward NE 20th Street); traffic switch to west side of roadway. No right or left turns onto 13th Place NE from NE 20th. Access to businesses on 136th Place NE available. Closure needed for utility work and light rail infrastructure.                              
    • NE Spring Blvd one-way traffic starts Jan. 14 through April 2019. Westbound lane on NE Spring Blvd closed between 134th Ave NE and 136th Place NE. Construction alert and map (1.4.19)
    • NE Spring Blvd all-lane, 24/7 hour closure between 132nd Ave NE and 134th Ave NE starting July 23, 2018 for approximately one year. No through traffic allowed. Business access available. Follow detour. Closure needed to conduct deep trench excavation, wall construction and culvert installation. Construction alert and map (07.13.18) 
    • NE Spring Blvd westbound lane between 134th Ave NE and 136th Place NE will be closed Jan. through April 2019. Business access will be maintained.

    Overlake-SR 520 Segment/Area

    The Overlake Village and Redmond Technology stations are located in this area and includes approximately 1.8 miles along the south edge of SR520 from 136th Place NE to the Overlake Transit Center.  

    Interstate 90 Segment/Area                          

    Area includes 7 miles from International District/Chinatown Station (Seattle) to the east end of the East Channel Bridge. Work is located within the existing center lanes of I-90.  

                     
    • Rainier Ave South HOV lanes/I-90: long term closure. Starting Dec. 10, 2018 through late 2020. Closure needed for construction of Judkins Park light rail station. Construction alert and map (12.6.18). 
    • Rainier Freeway Station closes Sat. Sept. 22. Bus route changes. Rainier Freeway station will remain closed until the Judkins Park Link Station opens in 2023. Most bus routes serving Rainer Freeway station will bypass it but Routes 554, 217 and select 212 trips will serve new stops on Rainier Ave So. Construction alert and map (09.13.18)
